Actuators for automotive ECUs are devices integrated with electronic components. When the ECU supplies voltage and current to them, they generate mechanical movements or regulate specific functions. Actuators support a wide range of applications including position adjustment and flow control. Dozens of different types of actuators can be found in the engine bay, exterior body and passenger compartment of modern vehicles.
The ECU determines how to drive actuators based on sensor feedback and internal programming. For example: if the air-fuel mixture of a gasoline engine becomes too lean, the lambda sensor (oxygen sensor) detects excess oxygen. The ECU then extends the opening duration of the fuel injector (an actuator) until the signal from the lambda sensor returns to the target value. In this way, the ECU implements closed-loop control.

1.Driving Methods of Actuators
The ECU drives actuators by supplying current to the actuator’s positive terminal or, more commonly, the ground circuit. Actuators convert electrical signals sent by the ECU into mechanical motion or physical action. They typically incorporate coils or electric motors internally, and may also take the form of heating elements or light sources.
Typical Actuators with Coils
• Carbon Canister Solenoid Valve
• Ignition Coil
• Common Rail Pressure Regulator
• Generator Armature
• Fuel Injector
• A/C Compressor Electromagnetic Clutch
• Camshaft Phaser
• PWM Variable Speed Fuel Pump
• Relay
• Wastegate / VGT Variable Geometry Turbo Actuator
Example 1: Relay Drive Circuit
The ECU controls the on/off state of the relay coil circuit. When the ECU grounds pin 85, the coil is energized and generates a magnetic field to close the contacts of the main circuit, enabling switching control for high-current loads.

2.Motor-Type Actuators
• Door Lock Motor
• Electronic Throttle / Idle Air Control Valve
• Power Seat & Exterior Mirror Adjustment Motor
• HVAC Blend Door Servo Motor for Automatic Air Conditioning
• Headlight Leveling Motor
• Radiator Cooling Fan
• Windshield Wiper Motor
• Sunroof / Slide-Tilt Drive Motor
Example 2: Electric Exterior Mirror
The system incorporates two servo motors. One handles vertical adjustment, and the other controls horizontal adjustment. The ECU alters the polarity of power supply to the motors to change rotation direction, tilting the mirror glass to the required angle. Trigger signals can come from the driver-side switch, seat memory module or reverse-linked function.

3.Heating Element Type Actuators
• Rear Windshield Defroster
• Traction Battery Pack Preheating
• Fuel Filter Heating
• Auxiliary Heating for Parking Heater
• Exterior Mirror Glass Heating
• Seat Heating
• Steering Wheel Heating
Example 3: Auxiliary Heating for Parking Heater
When an actuator performs heating functions, its temperature is limited by PTC elements. The illustrated auxiliary heater is equipped with heating wires to rapidly raise the temperature of air entering the cabin. The ECU supplies power to one or multiple heating wires in a pulsed manner: it delivers high power for rapid temperature rise initially, then maintains the set temperature with current at a reduced duty cycle to achieve efficient and safe constant-temperature control.

4.Lighting Function Actuators
• Dashboard Indicator Lights
• Light Sources Inside Headlight and Taillight Assemblies
Example 4: To limit power consumption or enable multi-purpose lighting with a single lamp, the ECU drives bulbs or LEDs using PWM. As shown in the figure, lamp brightness is determined by the duty cycle:
• Taillight mode: 25% duty cycle
• Brake light mode: 90% duty cycle
The same light source can function as both taillight and brake light, reducing energy consumption and simplifying the structure.

Summary
An actuator is the “action terminal” controlled by the ECU. It converts electrical signals into mechanical movement, thermal energy or light output and can be found throughout modern vehicles.
- Driving Method: The ECU supplies current by switching the positive circuit or, more commonly, the ground circuit.
- Main Types • Coil-based actuators: Solenoid valves, fuel injectors, relays, VGT and more. They utilize electromagnetic force to perform switching or proportional operations. • Motor-type actuators: Door locks, electronic throttles, seat/mirror adjusters, cooling fans, windscreen wipers, sunroofs, etc. Rotation direction is controlled by reversing power polarity. • Heating element actuators: Rear window defrosters, seat/steering wheel heating, battery pack preheating and others. Temperature is limited by PTC components. The ECU applies pulsed power for rapid heating and constant temperature maintenance. • Lighting actuators: Dashboard indicators, taillights/brake lights, etc. Brightness is adjusted via PWM duty cycle to achieve multi-function lighting with a single lamp and improve energy efficiency.
